Otoplasty in Libertyville

Plastic surgery performed on the ears is known as Otoplasty and it can treat a variety of imperfections in the shape of the ear.  If your ears make you self-conscious or you have been the victim of teasing due to the appearance of your ears, then you may want to consider otoplasty. This procedure is safe, provides natural results and usually only requires a weeks’ time to heal. Otoplasty also can give you ears that complement your features and provide a natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Ear Pinning for Protruding Ears

Otoplasty can be done on ears with congenital abnormalities or ears that are misshapen due to trauma. Ear Pinning is one of the most common procedures performed by doctors, and it pulls the ears closer to the skull so they do not excessively protrude. There are two ways to treat this:

  • Cartilage Scoring technique uses a small incision behind the ear, and the doctor removes cartilage to reposition the ears closer to the head.
  • Cartilage Sparing technique involves making incisions and relying on sutures and stitches to change the ear’s position.

Both procedures are usually done under a local anesthesia in adults or a general anesthesia for children.

Otoplasty to Treat Congenital Deformities

Reconstructive ear surgery corrects congenital deformities, such as:

  • Cagot Ear creates earlobes for those missing them.
  • Cat’s Ear to straighten ears that are folded forward.
  • Scroll Ear to treat ears that curl forward.
  • Wildermuth’s Ear for those whose ears curve in a reversed direction.
  • Microatia for those with severely small and underdeveloped ears.
  • Macroatia to reduce the size of those with oversized ears.

This can often improve hearing as well as give people ears that appear symmetrical.

Otoplasty for Trauma Treatment

Reconstructive surgery also treats ears affected by trauma, such as burns, lacerations, infection and torn piercings. Two very common conditions caused by trauma are:

Cauliflower ear due to repeated injury to the ear, common in those who play contact sports. It is caused by a separation of the cartilage and the perichondrium, where fluid forms and deforms the ear.

Skin Cancer and Malignant Melanoma can be a reason for otoplasty to reconstruct the ear tissue after cancer surgery.
