Tips for Maintaining Breast Implants

Jan 27 • 2 minute read

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the US and worldwide. When conducted by a board-certified plastic surgeon, breast augmentation is a safe and effective procedure for increasing breast size, correcting breast asymmetry, and restoring volume to breasts that have lost their fullness due to weight loss or pregnancy.

The recovery period after breast augmentation is minimal, but you need to carefully observe your doctor’s instructions during this time. Giving your breasts adequate time to heal will ensure better long-term results.

What Should You Do After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

After your breast augmentation procedure is complete, you need to observe the following measures to ensure you heal well and maintain your results:

1. Take Time to Recover

Breast augmentation often requires only a few days off work. While the recovery period is minimal, be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions to the letter during this time. For example, you may need to:

  • Avoid sleeping on your side or stomach for at least six weeks.
  • Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and blood-thinning medication such as aspirin.
  • Avoid getting the incision site wet for 3-5 days after surgery.
  • Not wear an underwire bra for about six weeks after the procedure.
  • Avoid having a bath for at least two weeks. Consider showering instead, but ensure you dry the surgical site afterward.
  • Not jump, run, or perform any vigorous physical activity that could potentially tear your stitches and dislodge the implants.

2. Support Your Breasts Appropriately

After a breast implant procedure, you’ll need a good-quality bra to help limit the impact of gravity on your breasts and prevent premature sagging. Select bras that fit properly and offer your augmented breasts the needed support. Wear a well-fitting bra as often as you can, including while exercising.

3. Moisturize

Apply lotion to your breasts regularly to keep them moisturized. Moisturizing your skin helps it retain its elasticity, which translates to firmer breasts.

4. Avoid Large Weight Fluctuations

Significant fluctuations in your body weight can cause breast tissue to sag. After a breast augmentation, it’s essential to maintain a steady weight by eating a healthy diet and regularly exercising. To avoid compromising the healing process, begin with brisk walks during the first few weeks following your surgery and gradually increase your activity level.

If you’re planning to get pregnant, keep in mind that the imminent body changes may take a toll on your breast implants. You can get a breast lift to help restore the shape and appearance of your breasts after you have given birth.

Wrapping Up

If you’ve finally achieved your ideal breast shape and size, your next step is to keep them looking their best. Avoid strenuous activities, such as exercising or lifting heavy items, too soon after your surgery, and provide adequate support for your breasts to limit future sagging. It’s crucial that follow your surgeon’s instructions after breast augmentation surgery to achieve the best results.
